Rehospitalization Within 12 Months Following Pulmonary Embolism

Short summary

Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is a severe and common condition and is recognized for its potential to lead to substantial short-term and long-term complications. Over the last couple of years, notable advancements have taken place in the diagnosis and management of PE, leading to shorter hospital stays and reduction in PE-specific mortality. [2,3] However, despite advancements in the management of PE, a significant proportion of patients experience one or more hospital readmission.

Rationale

The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate hospital readmissions for pulmonary embolism within 12 months among patients diagnosed with pulmonary embolism (PE). Assessing prevalence of symptoms prompting rehospitalization and also their association to comorbidities. This study seeks to discern whether rehospitalizations are attributed to recurrent PE or related to initial PE or unrelated causes.

Description of the cohort

The study is a register-based retrospective study of patients who had suffered a PE thus admitted to Odense University Hospital during the period from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2022.
