Use of cerebral computed tomography on patients with minor head injuries in a Danish emergency department: A retrospective cohort study

Short summary

Not yet made

Rationale

Achieving rapid diagnostics and providing high-value healthcare pose significant challenges in Western emergency departments. A common reason for emergency department care is traumatic brain injuries with the majority classified as minor head injuries defined as a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 13-15 and a history of loss of consciousness, amnesia, or disorientation. While most patients with minor head injuries are discharged after primary evaluation, a small percentage exhibit abnormal findings on computed cerebral tomography (CTC), with few requiring neurosurgical intervention. The use of CTC has proven an essential tool and is frequently used to determine neurological status, despite being expensive and exposing patients to ionizing radiation, potentially increasing the risk of cancer.

Description of the cohort

CTCs related to bleeding or trauma conducted from 01.01.2023 to 31.12.2023 at Odense University Hospital (OUH) Emergency Department (ED) in Denmark

Data and biological material
