Two years noninvasive ventilation in chronic hypercapnic COPD.

Short summary

To evaluate the effect of the addition of nocturnal home NIV to optimal standard treatment among patients with severe stable COPD with hypercapnic CFR.

Rationale

Many patients with advanced COPD have severe comorbidities which independently impact their prognosis. Therefore, improving survival in hypercapnic COPD patients is challenging. Long term prognosis following hospitalization in COPD is poor, with 5 year motality rates of around 50%. Therefore, one of the overall goals in the management of COPD is to minimize the number of disease-related hospitalizations, especially in those patients with high risk of developing acute respiratory failure.

Description of the cohort

COPD patients according to standard criteria, requiring invasive or non-invasive mechanical ventilation during an episode of acute respiratory failure due to exacerbation of COPD. Clinically stable and hypercapnic COPD patients.

Data and biological material

Settings and the hours of usage of the ventilator. Number of exacerbations, hospital admissions, number of in-hospital days, the need for intubation and number of deaths.
