Short summary

This study will extend and enrich existing longitudinal data of the Childhood Health, Activity and Motor Performance School (CHAMPS) cohort with the fourth follow-up data, to examine development in childhood of risk markers linked to lifestyle diseases, such as obesity, type-2-diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD) and osteoporosis, as well as hearing status, development of tinnitus and hyperacusis among young adults.

Rationale

Work package 1: The objective of work package 1 is to evaluate the long-term effect of increased physical education (6 hours per week versus 2 hours per week) in the Danish primary school for a number of markers for lifestyle diseases among young adults.

Work package 2: The purpose of work package 2 is to investigate hearing, attitude towards noise, noise exposure, incidence and if possible, severity of tinnitus / hyperacusis, and how persistent the problem is among adolescents and young adults in a follow-up study. The study will include both a prevalence and an incidence part.

Work package 3: The aim is to investigate the relationship between prolonged stress and hearing status, tinnitus and sound sensitivity (hyperacusis) among young adults.

Description of the cohort

The study population consists of approximately 2000 individuals, who were enrolled in the CHAMPS study between September 2008-March 2011 at age 6-13 years, or the subsequent follow-up data collections CHAMPS II (August 2011 - June 2014), CHAMPS Sound and Hearing study (October-December 2014), CHAMPS Eye Study (January 2015) or CHAMPS III (April-June 2015). All individuals with at least one data point during the data collection periods will be re-invited, when the participants are between age 18 to 26 years.

Data and biological material

Data: Anthropometry, DXA, Blood pressure, Accelerometry, Audimetry, Questionnaires, Parental questionnaire, National registries (National Patient Registry, Cause of Death, National Birth registry, Statistics Denmark, CPR registry).

Biological material: Blood samples, Hair samples.
