The aim of this study is to investigate if treatment with flucloxacillin increases drug metabolism in healthy volunteers, through induction of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, CYP1A2, CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6 and CYP3A4. Furthermore, it will be investigated whether flucloxacillin induces its own metabolism.
Worldwide there is an increase in antibiotic resistance which may have potential fatal long-term consequences. This is due to extensive use and sometimes misuse of antibiotics in the treatment of harmless infections (1). It is therefore of crucial importance to gain a better understanding of the pharmacological aspects of the treatment with commonly used antibiotics and their potential interaction with other drugs. This will ensure safe and rational use of antibiotics. The overall hypothesis for this study is that flucloxacillin contributes to undiscovered drug-drug interactions. We therefore hope that the results of this study can provide clinical evidence regarding the use and safety perspective of flucloxacillin when used alone and with other drugs.
In this study we will include healthy men and women, age 18-55 years. The subjects will primarily be recruited from the University of Southern Denmark.
We will obtain blood and urine samples.
