The RESPEKT campaign - does it work? Effects of a mass media campaign to increase treatment seeking and reduce stigma of alcohol dependence

Short summary

Only a minority of all inviduals with alcohol dependence seek treatment. Stigma is one important barrier. More knowledge is needed about interventions that can increase treatment seeking.

Rationale

Even though alcohol dependence is associated with great harm, it has, compared to other psychiatric disorders, one of the largest gaps between the number of individuals affected and the number of individuals in treatment. Stigma is an important barrier to treatment seeking. Thus there is a need for interventions to increase treatment seeking. The Danish organizations Alkohol & Samfund and Trygfonden have developed a media campaign, "RESPEKT", which has been broadcasted across Denmark since 2015. The campaign is unique from an international perspective and aims to increase treatment seeking. Similar interventions have up until now not been scientifically evaluated.
