TOPP ThOracoscopic treatment of Primary Pneumothorax - A National Prospective Randomised Trial

Short summary

The cohort consists of two subprojects: A national prospective randomised clinical study and an epidemiological study. The nationale prospective randomised clinical study is comparing to acknowledged forms of pneumothorax treatments in order to optimize the treatments.

Rationale

For this study we wish to collect biological material to be preservated in OPENs biobank. The material will consist of a blood sample from each included patient (approx. 200) at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Odense University Hospital. The aim is to identify any genetic reasons for the diagnosis.

Description of the cohort

Approx. half of the 200 patients will be randomised to thoracoskopic surgery. Prior to the operation therapeutical treatment will take place by stapling away visible bullae, alternatively, if there are no visible bullae, apex from the lungs will be stapled away instead. This biological material is also to be preservated in OPENs biobank for later analyses.

Data and biological material

The epidemiologycal study aims to identify pneumothorax in Denmark, by including patients in Denmark diagnosed with pneumothorax (regardless of the genesis) in the time period 1977-2008. In order to collect the needed data we will use the National Patient Registry.
