Sacral neuromodulation for neurogenic bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction.

Short summary

We want to investigate the efficacy of SNM for patients with multiple sclerosis and Parkinson´s disease suffering from neurogenic bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction with regard to functional outcome and quality of life. It is a prospective, randomized clinical trial in which the patients in the stimulation group will have the pacemaker turned on and the patients in the control group will have the pacemaker switched off. Observation periode is 6 months. The results will be compared at the end.

Rationale

Patients with neurological diseases often suffer from pelvic-organ dysfunctions, i.e. bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction, aside their cerebral affection. The pelvic-organ dysfunctions have a serious impact on morbidity and daily living for the patients. We hypothesis that SNM can significantly improve both the subjective patient reported quality of life and the objective quantifiable clinical outcomes compared with standard neurogenic management of bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction.

Description of the cohort

We include patients with multiple sclerosis and Parkinson´s disease admitted to our out patients clinic from other departments.

Data and biological material

We will follow the patients with questionnaire during clinic visits at 1, 3 and 6 months in the study. At the same we will do baseline urodynamics and after 6 months.
