The meaning of natural elements, aesthetics and homeliness in palliative patient rooms

Short summary

The project is a qualitative research project aiming to investigate the significance of natural elements as well as aesthetic sensory impressions in a hospital context in relation to conversations and relationship building. The project includes a concrete decoration and furnishing of a palliative room. The goal with this new knowledge is to create spaces and environments that contribute to the well-being of palliative patients and support trusting relationships and existential conversations.

Rationale

Existing research shows that the environment in hospitals influences the patients' experience of security during an admission and that especially nature and natural elements are of great importance for the patient's experience of hope, well-being and pain.

However, there is still a lack of research that sheds light on the benefits and significance of natural elements as well as aesthetic sensory impressions in a hospital context in relation to conversations and relationship building.

Description of the cohort

Palliative patients and their relatives admitted to a hospital as well as health care professionals.
