The longterm effects of sialoendoscopy for diagnosis and treatment of obstructive disease in Denmark

Short summary

Sialoendoscopy is a relatively new method for the diagnosis and treatment of non-neoplastic obstructive disease in the submandibular and parotid glands. This type of endoscopy is only performed in five ear-nose and throat-departments in Denmark. We have no scientific work in Denmark concerning long-term effects with this method.


Rationale

Obstructive disease in the salivary glands is common and was previously treated with removal of the affected gland. The symptoms are daily painful swellings related to meals and risk of infection in the salivary gland. Treating the obstruction with an endoscopy has fewer side effects than removal of the gland has. Removal of one submandibular gland can cause relative xerostomia and open surgery on the salivary gland involves a risk of facial nerve injury.


Description of the cohort

All sialoendoscopies or trans-oral removal of salivary stones performed at Holstebro, Vejle, Sønderborg, Køge and Hillerød Hospital, Denmark.


Data and biological material

We will collect data from the patients before and weeks after the operation. And we will register data about the operation. Later on we will use PROM (patient-recorded outcome measure) by e-mail.
