This project aims to investigate the extent to which pharmaconomist's pharmaceutical expertise and logistical work contribute to increasing the quality of drug handling and patient safety in hospital departments. This is done by recording, categorizing, and analyzing the questions that pharmaconomists are asked by other healthcare staff during their workday at Svendborg Hospital, OUH.
Pharmaconomists are currently performing several new tasks at the hospital because of a lack of nursing staff at the hospitals in Denmark. In this, pharmaconomists handle tasks such as dosing medicine, mixing and preparing antibiotics, clarifying the patients' usual medicine usage up to admission, ordering medicine and other tasks related to the handling of medicine. Pharmaconomists also teach other staff groups general tasks related to handling medicine, behavior in the medicine room, and other ad hoc topics.
The project aims to investigate the extent to which pharmaconomists pharmaceutical knowledge and management of medicines contribute to increasing the quality of medicine handling and patient safety in hospital departments. This is done by sampling and analyzing the questions that pharmaconomists are asked by other healthcare staff during their workday at Svendborg Hospital, Odense University Hospital (OUH). Questions are collected and recorded by physical presence in the clinic, in the daily work routine, or by phone and via email.
This project will thereby provide an overview of within what domains the presence of pharmaconomist strengthens handling of medicines in hospital departments.
The project will include pharmaceutical questions asked to 16 pharmaconomists over a period af 14 days, estimated at approximately 300 questions.
The study is an observational study with questionnaire data.
