Asthma is the most common childhood disease and exposure to environmental toxicants are suspected to contribute to the occurrence of asthma and allergy. In the Odense Child Cohort phthalates, bisphenols and perfluoroalkyl acids were measured during pregnancy and childhood. At age 12 years, children will be invited to clinical examination of asthma and allergy symptoms, including lung function measures.
Asthma is the most common non-communicable disease in children and is commonly seen in a triad with atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis. The estimated lifetime prevalence in Danish 5-year-old children is 12% for asthma and 7% for allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. Asthma is a critical and complex, heterogeneous condition associated with increased morbidity, reduced quality of life, significant societal costs, and is a common cause of hospitalization among Danish children. The incidence of pediatric asthma has increased during the second half of the 20th century globaly, andrecent research has focused on environmental toxicants as risk factors for childhood asthma. Bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFASs) are environmental chemicals with suspected endocrine disrupting abilities. They are detectable in >95% of urine or serum samples in the Danish population, and thus exposure to these chemicals is ubiquitous. In the Odense Child Cohort, BPA, phthalates and PFAS have been measured in urine and blood samples during pregnancy and childhood. Questionnaire data regarding asthma and allergy symptoms have been collected multiple times during childhood. At age 12 years, children from the Odense Child Cphprt will be invited to a clinical examination of asthma and allergy symptoms, including measured of lung function. The aim of the study is to investigate the association between prenatal and childhood exposure to PFAS, BPA and phthalates and the development of asthma, allergy and lung function at age 12 years.
The project is a case-control study nested in the Odense Child Cohort, which is an ongoing prospective cohort. Children with previous symptoms of asthma will be included as cases, and a similar number of children without previous asthma symptoms will be invited as healthy controls. We plan to invite approximately 550 children.
