This project seeks an in-depth understanding of the needs and experiences of women undergoing day surgery for breast cancer and their relatives. Using Participatory Design, a technological support tool will be co-created with patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals. Insights will be gathered through interviews, observations, and workshops, followed by prototype testing. The goal is to improve postoperative rehabilitation and provide better support for patients and families.
Day surgery is increasingly used in Denmark to optimize healthcare resources, but it also places greater responsibility on patients and their relatives for postoperative care. Women undergoing breast cancer surgery report uncertainty, stress, and a lack of support after discharge. Pilot studies highlight insufficient preparation and a need for guidance, while frequent unplanned healthcare contacts suggest inadequate home support. Existing literature focuses on surgical safety but often neglects the experiences of patients and their families.
