Adverse event profiles effects of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines in Danish children

Short summary

The COVID-19 mRNA vaccines have been tested for their specific effects against COVID-19 and for safety in randomized trials, but have not been tested for their effects on overall health. In the present study, which serves as a pre-requisite for a forthcoming register-based study, we will conduct interviews with parents, whose children experienced adverse events following immunization with COVID-19 mRNA vaccines.

Rationale

The objective of the project is to assess which types of adverse events were experienced after COVID-19 vaccines in children and adolescents (5-15 years of age) to clarify if these are identifiable using the Danish health registers and which events might be missed using register data. We do not aim to conclude whether the COVID-19 vaccines in fact cause these events, but to gather examples of potential adverse events in order to design algorithms that may function as a supplement to identify the affected children in the Danish health registers.

Description of the cohort

Participants will be recruited through social media posts asking for volunteers, on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Additionally, they might be recruited through secondary network, snowball sampling. We aim to include a minimum of 20 parents of children who have experienced adverse events after COVID-19 vaccination. Interviews will be conducted as single interviews based on a survey constructed for the study, but shared custody-holders may be interviewed together.
