Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis (HPS) is characterized by narrowing of the pylorus muscle seen in small children aged 3-10 weeks, with an insidence of 2-3,5/1000, 2,5 times more frequent in boys. Previously treated with open surgery, now laparoscopy is the surgery of choice. Ultrasound confirms the diagnosis, and shows elongated and thickened pylorus muscle. Surgical treatment is cruicial for these patients. Untreated can lead to malnutrition, weightloss and projectile vomiting.
In 2020 there were a convertion from open surgery to laparoscopic surgery on patients with HPS at Odense University Hospital. With this project we are going to compare the two types of surgery before and after 2020, by data from patient journals from an anesthesiological perspective. The primary aim is to compare laparoscopic and open surgery with regard to postoperative pain. Evaluated by use of opioid per- and postoperatively, occurance of respiratory and cardiovascular complications.
Children who has undergone operation for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis at Odense University Hospital by data collected from 01.01.2014 to 30.04.2022.
