The study was a descriptive registry study to examine the prenatal detection of esophageal atresia in Denmark. And examine characteristics of esophageal atresia with a focus on associated malformations, chromosomal abnormalities and preterm birth. The study used data from the Danish Fetal Medicine Database on alle children with esophageal atresia with a due date between 1st of January 2008 and 31st of December. The study used descriptive statistics in the analysis of the data.
Prenatal detection of esophageal atresia is found to be very difficult with a small part of the affected children detected prenatally. How the prenatal detection of esophageal atresia is in Denmark is not elucidated in other studies. The aim of this study was to describe the prenatal detection and characteristics of children with esophageal atresia in Denmark with a due date between 1st of January 2008 and 31st of December.
The study population consisted of liveborn children born with a postnatal diagnosis code for esophageal atresia registred in the Danish Fetal Medicine Database.
The study used registry data with information on maternal information, prenatal ultrasound scans during the pregnancy, congenital malformation diagnosis codes, pre- and postnatal karyotype analysis and information regarding the birth.
