True incidence of hip dislocation after hip hemiarthroplasty - a nationwide study based on Danish registries

Short summary

This study will reveal the extent of dislocations of hip hemiarthroplasty (HA) after femoral neck fracture (FNF) and be the first nationwide study of its kind. It will give our surgeons knowledge of the current standards -both on a national and hospital level. Depending on the results and comparisons to relevant countries, we will be able to either substantiate or forced to rethink our current procedures. An algoritm will be tested to see if it could be used in Danish quality registers.

Rationale

The primary objective is to report the true incidence of hip dislocations in acute femoral neck fracture (FNF) patients treated with hemiarthroplasty (HA) within one year of index surgery. Additionally, we aim to validate the Hermansen algoritm - a diagnostic algorithm identifying cases of dislocation after primary total hip arthroplasty - for HAs.

Description of the cohort

All patients in Denmark with the diagnosis "acute femoral neck fracture" and procedure "hemiarthroplasty" found in registers. We will identify patients with the correct coding for both diagnostic and procedural codes for dislocation of HAs, the remaining patient files will be manually screened to make sure that no dislocated HAs are lost to follow-up.
