The Vejle breast cancer outcome study

Short summary

In this project we investigate the frequency after 1 year of; late sequelae, frailty, altered functional capacity as well as the need for surgical correction, well-being and patient satisfaction for women treated at the breast surgery section, Vejle Hospital.

Rationale

More than 72,000 women are living today with the consequences of their treatment for breast cancer. According to the literature, half have late sequelae to their treatment. After the surgical treatment for breast cancer, there ensues a routine, follow-up course at the cancer department. In the Danish Health Authority's package course for breast cancer, a surgical 1 year check-up is recommended. In Vejle, such an inspection has been routine since 2017, and it provides a unique opportunity for follow-up, to clarify questions, concerns and to assess and handle any late sequelae and cosmetic inconveniences from the surgical treatment.

Description of the cohort

This is a prospective study, where approximately 200 women offered breast-conserving surgery will be invited to participate. We will investigate what healthcare personnel identify at the 1-year check-up, patient-reported complications, and wishes regarding possible treatment of these. Validated questionnaires will be used regarding discomfort before and after surgery, satisfaction with breast appearance, well-being, daily living skills, and self-sufficiency. These data will be compared with medical records and the 1-year consultation
