BREATHEIN: Better understanding obstructive REspiratory Airway disease Treatment and HEalth: a nationwide INvestigative survey
Short summary
Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects a significant portion of the population worldwide. Despite effective treatment, under-treatment is still common. A comprehensive national survey is being initiated to identify any challenges or barriers related to access to treatment and healthcare and to gain deeper insights into how asthma and COPD are experienced and managed in daily life.
Rationale
Asthma is globally the most common chronic non-communicable condition and affects approximately 300 million people. The annual report from the Danish Asthma Register (DrAstma) 2022 shows that a total of 15,388 individuals with already diagnosed asthma were treated for their asthma at Danish hospitals from July 2022 to June 2023. Data from the Global Burden of Disease study shows that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was the third most common cause of death globally, with 3.2 million people dying from COPD in 2017. The prevalence of COPD in Denmark at 17.4% is among the highest in the world. This project aims to provide valuable knowledge about patients' (asthma and COPD) experiences and treatment patterns in Denmark. We aim to conduct a national questionnaire survey of patients with asthma and COPD in Denmark to collect data on diagnostic methods, treatment approaches and patients' perception of control over their asthma and COPD.
Description of the cohort
To address the matter, patients receiving treatment for asthma and COPD will be asked to fill out a questionnaire, which will be electronically distributed via e-boks. The Danish National Prescription Registry will provide data to identify patients receiving treatment for asthma or COPD through medication dispensing and prescription records. We anticipate sending the questionnaire to around 400,000 individuals. The responses received will undergo quantitative analysis to determine the number of individuals actively undergoing treatment and their assessment of the effectiveness and satisfaction with the medical treatment.
