Lung cancer screening project in Southern Denmark

Short summary

1000 voluntary citizens aged 60-74 who are heavy smokers and have an increased risk of developing lung cancer must be included in the project. The participants are found through an initial questionnaire survey about smoking habits and general health. Project participants will be offered a CT scan of the chest once a year for 3 years. In connection with the first scan, a lung function test is also performed. The screening proces wil be evaluated for possible implementation.


Rationale

The purpose of the project is to examine the organizational and resource related issues linked to screening for lung cancer in Denmark. Including also the consequences for both screening participants and the healthcare system. In addition, the purpose is to investigate the possibilities for supporting technological aids. Finally the project must uncover the best way to reach relevant and possibly vulnerable citizens and offers smoking cessation.


Description of the cohort

Citizens aged 60-74 living on Funen and the islands


Data and biological material

CPR, name, age, residence, CT scans, lung function tests, smoking status, quality of life and socio-economic data. During the project period, the following are also processed: Responses to examinations and treatment carried out on the basis of incidental findings in the screening project, responses to examinations and treatment of cancer package courses based on participation in the screening project, other cancer package courses during the project period, hospitalizations or treatment for other diseases during the project period, blood test results and any death and cause.
