OTTiP

Short summary

The OTTiP project in Denmark investigates barriers adolescents with Eating Disorders (ED), their families, and healthcare professionals face during the transition from children to adult psychiatry. By understanding their values and experiences, it aims to improve treatment transitions for this vulnerable group. Notably, in 2018, over half of the 1,365 new ED patients were children and young people, indicating a pressing need for support (Sundhedsdatastyrelsen 2020).

Rationale

Over the past thirteen years, Denmark has seen a significant rise in individuals seeking Mental Health Services, particularly among children and young people, with a 66% increase from 2010 to 2018. A predominant issue is the transition from children and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) to adult psychiatry (AP) for adolescents with Eating Disorders (ED), their families, and healthcare professionals. This study aims to identify and address barriers and priorities during this transition, translating experiences into practical insights to improve care. Anorexia nervosa (AN) is prevalent among children and adolescents, with high mortality rates. Despite the long-term nature of ED treatment, many face structural barriers during transitions, leading to dissatisfaction and lack of confidence in the healthcare system. In response to rising admissions, the Region of Southern Denmark has restructured psychiatric services, aiming to streamline treatment for young patients. However, ethical challenges and potential burnout among healthcare professionals remain significant concerns. Research suggests that discontinuity in treatment can lead to negative outcomes, highlighting the need for improved integration and understanding of the transition process.

Description of the cohort

We will conduct in-depth qualitative interviews with fifteen adolescents with ED and their relatives and five-eight health care professionals. The recruitment of participants is through the Mental Health Services of Region South Denmark. The interviews follow a semi-structured interview guide, and we expect them to take place in the clinic
