Children of parents with severe mental disorders are at increased risk of developing psychiatric problems themselves already during early childhood. In this study, we will test a parent mediated intervention aiming at promoting mental wellbeing and healthy emotional and behavioral development among 1-3 year old children of mothers with severe mental disorder. This is tested in an RCT comparing online VIPP-SD to care as usual. Primary outcome is child behavioral symptoms
It is well documented that children of parents with severe mental disorders are at increased risk of psychiatric disorders during their lifetime. This is evident already during childhood and adolescence where the risk of a psychiatric diagnoses before age 18 is elevated 2-4 times with the highest relative risk before age 6 years. The high prevalence of psychopathology even among the youngest children of parents with SMI, indicates a need for systematic and selective early preventive interventions. In Denmark, infant psychiatry serves both 0-3 years old children with mental disorders and 0-3 years old children of parents with mental disorders. The latter group of children is not regarded as mentally ill but is included with an aim of prevention due to their high-risk status. However, national clinical guidelines are lacking, and the group is approached differently in the five Danish regions. In the present study we will test the effect of a video-based, parent-mediated intervention in an online format. The intervention is tested in the context of the child and adolescent mental health services in Southern Denmark.
Mothers with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, moderate to severe depression and borderline personality disorders who live with their 1-3 years old child in the Region of Southern Denmark will be recruited. Recruitment will take place via the mental health services in the region and on the basis of register data.
