Ileal reservoir length and functional outcome in ileal pouch-anal anastomosis: An assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial

Short summary

The aim of this randomized trial is to compare functional outcome after construction of a 10 cm versus 15 cm ileal reservoir for patients undergoing ileal pouch-anal anastomosis for ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis.

Rationale

Bowel function is preusmably the most important postoperative determinant of a succesful ileal pouch-anal anastomosis procedure. Bowel function depends on many factors, few of which are modifiable. The size of the reservoir is important. The aim of this trial is therefore to compare bowel function for two different pouch sizes.

Description of the cohort

Patients undergoing ileal pouch-anal anastomosis for either ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis.
