Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT)

Short summary

Project 1: Audit of patient journals for patients treated with i.v. antibiotics at home administered by nurses. The purpose is to describe the characteristics of the patients, treatment and outcome of their treatment course. Project 2. Audit of patients currently being treated with i.v. antibiotica in the hospital. The aim is to examine if patients are eligable for discharge and treatment with i.v. antibiotics at home, and to asses antimicrobial stewardship.

Rationale

Patients are often kept in hospital solely due to treatment with intravenous antibiotics. However, some patients may benefit from discharge and treatment with intraveneous antibiotics at home supported by visiting nurses or follow up by hospital doctors. However, this treatment should not comprimise patients safety or antibiotic stewardship (i.e. increased use of treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics). The overall aim is, via journal audits, to gain insight into which patients may benefit from i.v. treatment in a home setting, as well as which patients that should be remain hospitalized during treatment.

Description of the cohort

1. Patients discharged from OUH with i.v. antibiotic treatment between 01.01.2024 and 30.06.2024. 2. Patients at selected department, OUH treated with i.v. antibiotics for more than 2 days.
