Validity of Major Lower Extremity amputation surgical procedures codes in the Danish National Patient Registry

Short summary

In studies using data from registers or databases, a Major lower extremitya amputation(MLEA) event can be defined through the NOMESCO procedure codes, which are organized by anatomical level (eg. NGQ* amputation on of lower leg/knee, NFQ* amputation on hip/thigh. However, the validity MLEA procedure codes within the National Danish Health Registry (DNPR) is unknown.

Rationale

To evaluate the validity of the procedure codes for MLEA in the Danish National Patient Registry both in terms of procedure level, date of procedure and site of procedure.

Description of the cohort

All MLEA procedures in the region of southern Denmark conducted in 2017-2018 were sampled, resulting in 907 procedures in 633 unique patients. For all included procedures the surgical report in the medical records were reviewed by a medical doctor and a medical student to verify the level, date and site of the procedure. In cases of doubt an orthopedic consultant reviewed the surgical report.
