Background Due to the increase in the Danish elderly population, it is assumed that they will also take a more presiding role in prehospital emergency care. Previous studies have shown that age over 80 is one of the dominant risk factors for mortality. Other risk factors are comorbidities and being male. A rise in the Danish population with the shift in age distribution toward more elderly people than before has occurred over the last generations and is set to continue. Following this a higher number of people 80 years and older are treated by the ambulance services. The primary object of this study is to elucidate the prehospital treatment of octogenarians and older adults. The aim of the study is to describe the influence emergency care has on the mortality for octogenarians and older adults.
The case population is the cohort of elderly ≥80 years old who had an ambulance presence in the period January 2021 to December 2022. For each patient, will five elderly individuals be matched by sex and age
The primary data source is records from the electronical Prehospital Medical Record System, the Civil Person Register (CPR-register), and the Danish National Patient Register within the Region of Southern Denmark.
