Wegovy is a weight-reducing medication that was introduced to the Danish market in December 2022. Since then, there has been an increase in consumption. A study has shown that Danish users achieve the same weight loss as in the clinical efficacy studies. Other studies have subsequently shown that some Danes do not use the product as recommended. The purpose of the project is to examine the used dosages and experienced effects of Wegovy among Danish adult users. This includes mapping of dosages,
Wegovy is administered as a subcutaneous injection once a week, with a starting dose of 0.25 mg which is increased over a period of 16 weeks to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once a week. A cohort study with more than 110,000 Danish users of Wegovy shows that around half of users continue with 1 mg after the fourth prescription refill (Ladebo et al., 2024). Furthermore, a survey study with approximately 550 Danish users of Wegovy shows that users achieve the same weight loss as in the clinical efficacy studies (Sørensen et al., 2024,). Lastly, a qualitative study indicates that Wegovy users develop their own methods for dosing the medication, for example by "counting clicks" on the Wegovy pen (Graabæk et al., 2024, unpublished data). Knowledge of users' use of Wegovy, including dosage and duration is important for understanding the full effects of Wegovy. This applies to both the extent of weight loss and side effects in relation to the dosage used. This knowledge is essential for both clinicians and health authorities regarding prescriptions, treatment guidance, and regulation of treatment with Wegovy.
The project involves a questionnaire at the counters of Danish pharmacies, where adult individuals who are filling a Wegovy prescription will be invited to participate. An electronic version of the questionnaire will be used, which pharmacy staff can read aloud to customers directly at the counter at around 20 pharmacies in Denmark over a period of 10 days.
