Highly Specialized Functions in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery

Short summary

Highly specialized orthopaedic trauma care includes severe fractures such as pelvic injuries, complex heel or talus fractures and open fractures. These injuries can be severely disabling. Despite this, outcomes for Danish patients are unknown due to the lack of a fracture registry. About 700 cases occur annually, but there is no formal quality assurance, highlighting the need to standardize and improve care.

Rationale

According to the Danish orthopedic specialty plan, highly specialized functions include treatment of severely injured patients, internal fixation of pelvic and acetabular fractures, open Gustilo type III fractures, large segmental bone loss, and complex fractures such as calcaneus and talus. Despite the serious long-term consequences, no registry or specific diagnostic codes exist to track these patients. Pelvic and acetabular fractures often result from high-energy trauma and lead to reduced function, quality of life, and increased risk of unemployment or sexual dysfunction. Complex hindfoot fractures, such as calcaneus and talus, are associated with high complication rates, long-term disability, and poor return to work. The project aims to improve and ensure the quality of care for patients with complex fractures treated at the highest level of orthopaedic trauma care, by establishing and using a national quality database.
