Oral versus intravenous fluid therapy in the emergency department - a feasibility trial

Short summary

This randomized trial includes 250 adult emergency patients prescribed ≥1000 ml IV fluids. The study assesses whether patients can drink prescribed fluids instead of receiving intravenous therapy, recruitment feasibility, and physiological responses.

Rationale

The Danish healthcare system faces growing pressure as demand rises. Strengthening primary care aims to ensure access for vulnerable patients and reduce admissions. Dehydration is a common cause of emergency admission, usually treated with IV fluids, though it is unclear if oral hydration is equally effective.
