Articifial Intelligens in Telemonitoring for Patients living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Short summary

This PhD project explores how AI-supported decision-supports influences clinical practice and the management of potential exacerbations. It focusses on the preparatory phases of implementing an AI-based decision support model within Middelfart Municipality.

Rationale

In Middelfart Municipality, a "PRO-active approach" is being implemented as part of the national TeleKOL program. Within this approach, patients measure not only the usual vital parameters included in TeleKOL but also temperature and spirometry. The initiative further includes daily follow-ups on patients' readings, enhanced access to healthcare professionals, and expanded treatment options through delegated clinical authority. As part of this effort, an artificial intelligence (AI) solution has been developed to predict a change in the patients condition based on the daily measurements gathered through the PRO-active approach. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether this AI-Based Decision Support makes a difference in clinical practice. The study has a descriptive and hypothesis-generating aim, and the results of this sub-study will serve as a basis for planning the further testing of AI-Based Decision Support in connection with telemonitoring. The objective is to generate preliminary knowledge about feasibility, the use of the technology, and patterns in how AI-Based Decision Support influences the clinical work of healthcare professionals.

Description of the cohort

Patterns and trends for improving the telemonitoring solution including the AI-design will be indentified in a quantitative feasibility/ pilot study with a descriptive and hypothesis-generating focus. The study consists partcipants living with COPD. All study participants (n = ≥30) will receive telemonitoring integrated with AI-Based Decision Support. For half of the participants, the monitoring nurses will have access to the AI-generated text output, while for the other half, this feature will be deactivated, meaning that the text output will not be visible or available to the healthcare staff.
