Risk of complications after closed reduction of dislocated THA/HAs under general anesthesia in the operating theater vs surgeon sedation in the emergency depart

Short summary

This study is initiated to investigate whether there is a difference in the risk of complications, when reducing dislocated hip prostheses (THA or HA) in the emergency department under sedation compared to the operating theater under general anesthesia. Dislocation of hip prostheses is a common and serious complication that is managed differently across Danish hospitals.

Rationale

This study aims to retrospectively compare outcomes and complication rates between emergency department sedation and general anesthesia for the management of hip prosthesis dislocation in Denmark. In perspective, the study may contribute to the development of a national guideline to optimize the management and safety of future patients.

Description of the cohort

This study is a retrospective review of patient records across the entire Region of Southern Denmark, including patients from the following hospitals: Esbjerg, Sønderborg/Aabenraa, OUH/Svendborg, and Kolding/Vejle. Inclusion criteria is all patients who underwent closed reduction of a dislocated THA or HA between May 1, 2022, and October 1, 2025. We expect to include 500-600 patients within the time period.
