The workshop was structured and reported in line with the PRODUCES+ framework. PRODUCES+ is underpinned by principles of shared ownership, transparency, and reflexive learning. This approach is highly collaborative and thus well-suited working with SDM. We included 52 participants from the national SDM conference (Dansk Forum for Fælles Beslutningstagning) organised by the national Center for Shared Decision Making and the Danish Network for Shared Decision-Making.
Shared decision-making (SDM) is widely recognised as the cornerstone of patient-centred care. Despite growing evidence supporting the effectiveness of SDM in improving decision quality, user satisfaction, and adherence, its implementation in everyday clinical practice remains inconsistent and underwhelming. SDM involves aligning medical decisions with patients' values, preferences, and goals, which often requires a significant amount of information to be exchanged between the patient and healthcare professional. Several interventions have been used to prepare patients for participating in decision-making, most notably through the use of decision aids. However, less attention has been given to the experiential learning that arises when such initiatives do not unfold as intended in clinical practice. Recognising that solutions are more likely to be relevant and sustainable when shaped by those directly affected, this study adopts a co-creation perspective. Through collective reflections on what has not worked and what may hold promise, we aim to identify failures and learning opportunities related to preparing patients for SDM during waiting time or in the waiting room, and to generate actionable ideas that can be implemented and sustained in everyday practice.
The workshop was embedded within the national SDM conference (Dansk Forum for Fælles Beslutningstagning) hosted by the Center for Shared Decision Making at the University Hospital of Southern Denmark and the Danish Network for Shared Decision-Making. Participants represented a diverse mix of patients, stakeholders, healthcare professionals, and researchers engaged in SDM in clinical or academic settings.
Workshop data consists of audio-recorded group reflections, written notes, and a few descriptive data, sex, age and profession/occupation.
