The purpose of the project is to provide epidemiological profiles of a number of selected types of cancer, with a focus on establishing models for the future prevalence of cancer diseases on the basis of observed epidemiological characteristics.
The epidemiological characteristics of cancer are continuously changing due to changes in both incidence and prognosis. The prevalence of persons alive with a history of cancer is expected to increase, particular concerning long-term survivors. Consequently, it is expected that there will be an increasing demand in terms of rehabilitation and follow-ups monitoring with corresponding challenges for the healthcare system.
The number of persons who, at a point in time, are living with previously diagnosed cancer (prevalence) will vary between the various cancer forms due to variations between cancers concerning past and future trends in incidence rate (new cases) and mortality rate (deaths). Therefore, projecting the future prevalence of cancer must be done for each specific cancer form separately.
CanEpid takes advantage of the unique opportunities for register-based epidemiological research in Denmark. The aim is to provide past and current epidemiological profiles of a range of cancer forms. In various scenarios these results are used for forecasting future incidence, mortality and resulting prevalence of the cancers concerned.
Via data from the diagnosis related grouping (DRG) system, a cost of illness assessment will be performed for each of the cancer forms, with particular focus on DRG cost ratios per patient-year stratification by treatment received.
The purpose of the project is to provide epidemiological profiles of a number of selected types of cancer, with a focus on establishing models for the future prevalence of cancer diseases on the basis of observed epidemiological characteristics.
The project is purely descriptive in nature with no pre-specified scientific hypotheses to be tested. It is expected that the project results will form the basis for further studies.
Trajectories for about 20 specific cancer forms are established using data from the Danish Cancer Registry. The target population comprises all patients alive at January 1, 2000 with one or more of these cancers plus all new cases registered from January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2012.
Each cancer trajectory is enriched with data from the Danish National Patient Register and the Danish Civil Registration System to provide information on treatment and civil status.
