Support women's decision making - developing and testing a decision aid for women with urogenital prolapse

Development of a decision aid for women with urogenital prolapse followed by an intervention to investigate the effect on the perceived shared decision making in the clinical consultations. A randomized controlled non blinded multicenter study.
Rationale
Background Health care communities, politicians and patient organizations worldwide emphasize the importance of promoting good provider-patient communication and patient involvement in their treatment planning, their health care and the treatment decisions concerning themselves. Women with urogenital prolapse are treated with different kind of treatment strategies e.g. pelvic floor exercise, life style changes, no treatment or surgery. Evidence for treatment effect and possible outcome are not obvious and the best health care decision for the individual woman can be difficult to define. The concept of shared decision making (SDM) can be used to support the participation of patients in their own health care decision. Here patients' preferences should be integrated in the decision making. Decision aids are known to offer support for SDM. Objective The objective is to develop a decision aid in the context of an online app solution using a multicriteriel analytic approach in order to support SDM. The decision aid is developed involving four national gynecological departments through participatory design. The decision aid will be tested in a randomized, controlled multicenter trial in three hospital departments in the Region of Southern Denmark. The developed decision aid will be tested for effect on the patient perceived SDM and the patient perceived satisfaction with the decision to measure successful patient involvement and increased health care professionals integration of preferences in the clinical consultations with women with urogenital prolapse.
