The Effect of Rehabilitation Using Kneehab Bandage After Knee Injury

Short summary

An overview of patients with knee injury treated with kneehab bandage (NMES - neuromuscular electrical stimulation) as supplement to other treatment.

Rationale

We see a lot of patients with indescribable knee pain. Common for these patients is a long period of immobilization as a consequence of descending activity level. This can lead to muscle atrophy in the M. quadriceps and especially M. vastus medialis obliquus (VMO). The patients experience difficulties in their rehabilitation program due to lack of muscle activity and for most of them a great deal of pain, which excludes them from training. The circle of pain under rehabilitation can be very difficult to break, and the benefit of rehabilitation is reduced due to pain.

VMO is a very important part of the quadriceps. This part of the muscle keeps the patella aligned and plays an important part extension of the knee from -30 degrees to 0. M. It has an important role in regaining full strength of the muscle and range of movement in the joint. Thereby it reestablishes alignment around the knee which we anticipate will lead to less pain.

Knee pain has multiple causes, but most of the patients have reduced activity level in VMO.

The patients will be instructed in using kneehab twice a day in 20 minutes for 6 weeks. This demands a certain amount of self-discipline, and the treatment demands change in the patient's normal way of living.

The purpose of this study is to investigate which patients will benefit from the use of NMES.

Description of the cohort

Patients with knee injury in need of a supplement to other training treatment.
