Towards more appropriate use of drugs: Testing models for discontinuation of unnecessary treatment with proton pump inhibitors

Short summary

Many people use proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) long-term with no solid indication for the treatment. In this project we will test two models to stop long-term PPI treatment in patients who do not have a solid indication for the treatment.

Rationale

The consumption of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in Denmark is massive, and steadily rising. This is caused by an accumulation of long-term users, of whom many no longer benefit from using PPIs.

In this project we want to test two models/interventions to stop PPI treatment among patients who use these medications with no solid indication in collaboration with the patient's general practitioner. This will be done by identifying long-term users when they come to the pharmacy to redeem a prescription for their PPI medication.

Description of the cohort

Persons who are >18 years of age, have used PPIs regularly >6 months, experience no or mild acid-related symptoms, do not use NSAIDs or antithrombotics and are interested in reducing or stopping the treatment.

Data and biological material

Identification and contact information (CPR number, name, place of residence, telephone number), name and telephone number of GP and information on the patient's PPI treatment (indication, who started the treatment, medication and dosage)
