Emercengy care for Nursing Home Residents - An explorative study of acute events at Nursing Homes

Rationale
Nursing home residents represent a frail population, and hospital admissions within this population are associated with negative outcomes such as increased risk of delirium, hospital-acquired infections, functional disability, and mortality. Given these potential complications, acute hospital admissions might not always represent a person-centered solution, where the resident and the family member's voices are heard and taken into account in the decision making process. Nevertheless, limited research is identified describing what the elements, interactions and decisions are made when an acute situations in a nursing home happens. Therefore, there is a need to understand the factors surrounding an acute situation in a nursing home to and work towards identifying whether and where improvements are needed. The aim of this project is to describe qualitative conditions of the complex situation nursing home residents, relatives, nursing home staff, primary care doctors, ambulance staff and staff in emergency departments experience when an acute event happen and there is need for emergency care. It will also investigate possibilities to ensure personal integrity for the nursing home residents.
Description of the cohort
The cohort include residents in permanent residence in a nursing home. Also individuals around the resident in acute situations such as relatives, nursing home staff and health care professionals.
