Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer type in Denmark, and CRC still ranks second in deaths caused by cancer. AB-care is a prospective clinical feasibility study, where we will identify patients with bacteremia with anaerobic CRC-associated bacteria and offer them colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) in order to estimate the prevalence of colorectal cancer and precancerous tumors.
Can the findings of anaerobic gut-associated bacteria in the blood stream predict CRC? The aims of the study are: To identify patients with bacteremia with anaerobic bacteria and offer them colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) to provide real-time data on CRC following bacteremia with CRC-associated bacteria To detect and stage incident colorectal cancer, precancerous tumours, or polyps in patients with anaerobic bacteremia. To follow up on the patients' disease course, prognosis and eventual death over a three-year period via electronic medical records and national registers.
Adult patients admitted to Odense University Hospital with anaerobic bloodstream infection will be considered for inclusion. After invitation, the patients will be included and excluded based on a number of criteria. The CCE procedure will take place 4-8 weeks after discharge and will be undertaken using the PillCam Colon 2.
CCE videos and Electronic patient file.
