Health-related quality of life and psychological well-being in family members of mental health service users being cared for in adult forensic and non-forensic mental settings.

Short summary

The study investigates health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and psychological well-being in family members of forensic mental health service users compared to family members of non-forensic mental health service users.

Rationale

No study has evidently assessed the quality of life in family members of forensic service users compared to non-forensic service users. However, it has, however, been suggested, that family members in forensic mental health settings face severe burdens. For example, a recent systematic review shows, that family members experience guilt feelings and massive responsibilities. These results are mirrored in a qualitative study with 15 family members (parents) in FMHS in Denmark.

Description of the cohort

Family members of service users with a mental illness being cared for in inpatient settings. The service users (aged 18+ years at the time of the survey) have been hospitalized for a minimum of one month in a mental health unit within the past five years. Family members should understand Danish.
