Peer-to-peer support for the diabetespatients in Denmark- a qualitative study

Short summary

For managing diabetes in everyday life, recieving social support from others with similar or related experiences, can be beneficial for people with diabetes. Peer to peer mentor programs already exist in Denmark, but a wish for an integrated peer-to-peer support program in the Danish Health Care System, have been expressed by user representatives. Knowledge about how to recruite potential peer-to-peer mentors and maintain their motivation and engagement to stay a peer-to-peer mentor, is sparse.

Rationale

Diabetes is associated with psysical and psychological challanges. Social support from family, friends and peers with similar experiences, have shown in several studies, to have a positive impact on the clinical outcomes in people with diabetes. User representatives in Denmark have expressed a wish for development of a peer-to-peer support program integrated in the Danish Health Care System, where people with diabetes can recieve social support from others with similar experiences in living with and managing diabetes in everyday life. Similar studies from Danish setting, have shown difficulties in recruiting potentiel peer-to-peer workers, and the aim of this study, is to gain knowledge of the needs, wiches, experiences and expectations of people with diabetes, in relations to becomming and staying a peer-to-peer mentor for other people with diabetes, in a peer-to-peer support program in Denmark.
