Hospital Doctors' Perspectives and Attitudes Toward Antibiotic Prescribing in a Low-Resistance Country: An Interview Study

Short summary

This interview study explores hospital doctors' and department leaders' perspectives on barriers and facilitators for responsible antibiotic use in a low-resistance country. Despite national and regional efforts, non-responsible prescribing persists. The study aims to identify clinical and organizational factors influencing prescribing practices and examine potential mismatches between clinical staff and the management of the hospital.

Rationale

Antibiotic resistance is a growing global problem, partly due to antibiotics not always being used responsibly. This study explores doctors' perspectives on antibiotic prescribing and how they use antibiotics in their daily clinical practice. The study will also examine how hospital leadership can play a role in promoting responsible antibiotic prescribing.

Description of the cohort

The informants are doctors employed at Hospital of Southern Jutland. Doctors across various career stages from emergency medicine, internal medicine, orthopaedics and general and colorectal surgery will be included.

Data and biological material

A qualitative method is considered the most suitable approach to collect in-depth descriptions of the doctors' thoughts and perspectives. Individual interviews are chosen over focus group interviews to explore the field without distraction.
