The outcome of fistulectomy in the treatment of anal fistula in patients with Crohn`s disease. A retrospective cohort study

Short summary

A retrospective study to asses the outcome of fistulectomi with and without anal sphincter reconstruction, for anal fistula in patients with Crohn`s disease. Recurrence rate and wound healing were assessed after fistulectomy and sphincter reconstruction .


Rationale

Assessing outcome of surgical treatment of complex perianal fistulas in Crohn's disease. Primary objective was recurrence of anal fistulas after surgical treatment. Secondary objectives were risk factors for recurrence, wound healing and risk of permanent stoma.


Description of the cohort

This study was conducted as a retrospective cohort study and identifyed 74 adult (≥ 18 years old) patients with Crohn's disease and perianal fistulas treated by fistulectomy with primary sphincter reconstruction or fistulotomy at The Department of Surgery A, Odense University Hospital, Denmark during the period between 1.1.2008 and 31.12.2017 with up to 2 year follow-up from fistula surgery. Patient identification and data extraction were done through accessible electronic patient hospital records.


Data and biological material

Demographic data and operative findings as well as clinical follow-up data were collected.
