Long-term follow-up of resurfacing and stemmed metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty compared to metal-on-polyethylene total hip arthroplasty - metal ion levels, pseudotumors and patient reported outcome

Short summary

To improve total hip arthroplasty survival bearings consisting of metal-on-metal was introduced in the early 21st century. However short term studies with no control group showed tendencies for these bearings to produce pseudotumors and release of metal ions such as cobalt and chrome into the blood of patients. This can lead to revision surgery, but no study has investigated the longterm prevalence and levels of these variables and compared them to total hip arthroplasty with standard bearings

Rationale

To determine if metal ion blood levels, pseudotumors and patient reported outcome change over time comparing Hip resurfacing arthroplasty, metal-on-metal and metal-on-polyethylen total hip arthroplasty

Description of the cohort

121 patients from a consecutive patient series with resurfacing hip arthroplasty, 34 patients with large head metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty and 50 patients with metal-on-polyethylen total hip arthroplasty operated at Odense University Hospital or Næstved Hospital between 2005 and 2010. They were previously examined with the above mentioned variables as part of a PhD study in 2011-2012. Data was never published.

Data and biological material

The data collected in this study are questionnaires about patient reported outcomes, results of MRI scans and results of blood test in Redcap.
