What matters to patients with severe hip or knee osteoarthritis? Decisional quality, patient involvement and health outcome.

Short summary

To investigate if an in-consult PtDA will increase decision quality in patients with severe hip or knee OA? The impact on patient experienced involvement and patient reported outcome (PRO) on pain, physical function, quality of life and patient satisfaction.

Rationale

Hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) are considered preference sensitive conditions and can be treated surgically or non-surgically. However, 7% to 18% of patients reports dissatisfaction on postoperative improvement. It is hypothesized that lack of adequate information and patient involvement might lead to some misalignment of patient's expectations and satisfaction. Potential benefit of increased patient involvement in healthcare decisions is suggested. Shared decision making (SDM) supports patient's active involvement and quality decisions. SDM can be facilitated using patient decision aids (PtDAs), yet research on SDM and PtDAs in patients with severe hip or knee OA, is needed.

Description of the cohort

Participants are recruited from the fast-track surgery setting of Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Section for Hip and Knee Replacement, Lillebaelt Hospital, Vejle Inclusion criteria: Patients diagnosed with severe primary OA eligible to primary THA/TKA, age>18 years, able to understand and read Danish and giving informed consent. Exclusion criteria: Previous THA or TKA on the contralateral side, cognitive impairment, non-OA-related reason for the visit.

Data and biological material

PROM, interview and focus group interviews. Treatment recieved (PRO, provider or journal).
