Optimal pain management after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery

Short summary

The purpose of the study is to investigate effects and side effects of two different postoperative treatment regimens after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). We will investigate a retrospective patient-cohort treated with Oxycodone and two prospective patients-cohorts treated with Oxycodone and Morphine, respectively.

Rationale

Postoperative pain management after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery aims for the patient to be reasonably pain-free at rest (Visual Analog score = VAS < 3). Furthermore, the pain treatment strives for postoperative painless sleep, reduced painful mobilization and sufficient postoperative coughing. At the department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, OUH, all patients operated by VATS-technique are discharged with a 2-week Oxycodone phase-out schedule. Although Oxycodone has been the preferred drug after VATS-surgery at our department, we have no information regarding the effect and any side effects of this treatment. We therefore want to investigate if the departments standard postoperative pain regime is satisfactorily effective and whether there are no recognized side effects after discharge.

Description of the cohort

One retrospective patient cohort (100 patients) and two prospective patient cohorts (100 + 100 patients) will be included in the study.
