Evaluation of the extent of loss of renal function and survival in diabetic patients operated for renal cell carcinoma

Short summary

In this observational, retrospective register-based cohort study, the outcome in renal function and overall survival after nephrectomy in patients with RCC and DM will be investigated and compared to a general population without DM receiving nephrectomy for RCC.

Rationale

This study will investigate the outcome in renal function and overall survival after nephrectomy in patients with RCC and DM. These patients will be compared to a general population without DM receiving nephrectomy for RCC.

Description of the cohort

Danish patients operated with nephrectomy (radical and partial) for renal cell carcinoma and pre-operatively diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. They will be compared with two matched control groups neither diagnosed with RCC nor operated with nephrectomy, with respectively healthy individuals and individuals with DM.

Data and biological material

Register-based data including: Patient Identification Number (PIN) Sex Date patient was recorded, as relevant, with: Diabetes mellitus Renal cell carcinoma Radical nephrectomy Partial nephrectomy Receiving first treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) i.e. dialysis or trans-plantation Dead Recurrence of kidney cancer Patient's age when nephrectomy was performed TNM staging of renal tumour Histopathology of kidney tumour Type (clear cell, papillary, chromophobe etc.) Grade
