The effect of dicloxacillin on oral absorption of drugs

Short summary

The risk of drug-drug interactions increases. The primary aim of this study is to investigate if treatment with dicloxacillin can lead to drug-drug interactions through induction of the efflux transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp). We will also investigate whether dicloxacillin induces its own metabolism. This will be investigated in a clinical trial using healthy volunteers.

Worldwide there is an increase in antibiotic resistance which may have fatal long-term consequences. This is due to extensive use and sometimes misuse of antibiotics in the treatment of harmless infections. It is therefore of crucial importance to gain a better understanding of the pharmacological aspects of the treatment with commonly used antibiotics and their potential interaction with other drugs. This will help ensure safe and rational use of antibiotics. The overall hypothesis of this study is that dicloxacillin contributes to undiscovered drug-drug interactions. We believe that the results of this study can provide clinical evidence regarding the use and safety perspectives of dicloxacillin when used alone and with other drugs.

Description of the cohort

We will include healthy volunteers between 18 to 55 years. We will recruit the cohort through short presentations held at lectures at University of Southern Denmark and via posters at Odense University Hospital and University of Southern Denmark.

Data and biological material

Throughout the study we will obtain blood and urine sample and ask if any adverse events occur during the time for intake of dicloxacillin.
