Lung abscess - a retrospective assessment of clinical factors and prognosis

Short summary

Lung abscess has previously been described as relatively common complication to pneumonia. The condition is however relatively rare in Denmark, with little knowledge regarding typical patient riskfactors, most common pathogens, diagnostic methods used, length of hospital stay and mortality. The project has been initiated in order to assess these aspects in a Danish hospital setting.

Rationale

Lung abscess has previously been described as relatively common complication to pneumonia. The condition is however relatively rare in Denmark, with little knowledge regarding typical patient riskfactors, most common pathogens, diagnostic methods used, length of hospital stay and mortality. The project has been initiated in order to assess these aspects in a Danish hospital setting.

Description of the cohort

Patients previously admitted to the department of respiratory medicine with a lung abscess diagnosis

Data and biological material

Data used in the project: - Patient baseline information upon admission (e.g. demographic data, comorbidities, medication, known risk factors, objective findings upon clinical assessment) - Use of and results of diagnostic tests during the admission (e.g. blood tests, imaging, invasiv procedures, microbiological tests, histology and cytology) - Treatment given (e.g. antibiotics, invasive treatment) - Result of outpatient follow-up within 6 months after admission - Outcome data (e.g. mortality, length of hospital stay)
