What matters to patients with severe hip or knee osteoarthritis? Decisional quality, patient involvement and health outcome

Short summary

Hip and knee osteoarthritis(OA) are anpreference sensitive conditions and can be treated surgically or non-surgically. 7- 18% of patients reports dissatisfaction after treatment. Patient involvement, throug shared decision making(SDM) is suggested. The overall aim is to investigate if SDM can increases the decision quality for patients with severe OA in hip or knee. A randomized controlled trial will provide data to examine decision quality, patient involvement and patient-reported outcome

Rationale

Hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) are considered preference sensitive conditions and can be managed surgically or non-surgically according to a range of factors including the patient and clinicians preference. However, 7-18% of surgically managed patients report dissatisfaction with the postoperative outcome. It is hypothesized that lack of adequate information and patient involvement in the decision process might lead to misalignment of patient's expectations and subsequent dissatisfaction. Accordingly, increasing patient involvement in healthcare decisions may be beneficial. Shared decision making (SDM) supports patient's active involvement in the process and improves the quality of decisions. SDM can be facilitated using patient decision aids (PtDA), which have shown significant benefits in a range of patient groups. However, research on SDM and PtDAs in patients with severe hip or knee OA, is lacking.
