Predicting individual prognosis in patients with lung cancer - the influence of cancer cell type and disease stage on survival

Short summary

The purpose of the study is to examine the survival of patients with lung cancer of four different cell types: adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, and others, stratified on disease stage. This knowledge will enable clinicians to give the individual patient a more precise prognosis. Hopefully, it may even be possible to propose an algorithm for calculation of a prognosis score for lung cancer patients.


Rationale

All patients diagnosed with lung cancer in Denmark are registered in the Danish Lung Cancer Registry (DLCR). The annual reports from the registry provide important knowledge of the survival of the patients with different lung cancer cell types: we know that survival is better among patients with adenocarcinoma than among those with squamous cell carcinoma, and we know that survival is higher in lower stages of lung cancer. However, in the annual reports there are no comparisons of the different cell types on specific stages of lung cancer and we are therefore not able to do a direct comparison of survival in different stages for different cell types. Does a patient with stage III lung cancer have a better survival if he has adenocarcinoma than if he has squamous cell carcinoma? Furthermore, what influence does his age, sex, co-morbidity, and treatment have on his individual prognosis?


Description of the cohort

The cohort is all patients diagnosed with lung cancer in Denmark in years 2003-2020.


Data and biological material

Clinical data on all patients diagnosed with lung cancer in Denmark in years 2003-2020 will be extracted from the Danish Lung Cancer Registry.
